Moving Averages Explained: SMA vs EMA, 50- and 200-Day Averages

Updated: 2026-10-26 · Türkçe

A moving average recalculates the average of the last N closes on every new candle, smoothing price noise and showing trend direction — the most basic indicator there is. Below is where Bitcoin, Ethereum, gold and stocks stand against their 20-, 50- and 200-day averages today, followed by the types of averages and crossovers.

Price vs moving averages (daily)

Percent distance of price from each average; positive means price is above it. 50 / 200: where the 50-day sits against the 200-day.

Simple (SMA) vs exponential (EMA) moving average

A simple moving average (SMA) weights the last N closes equally. An exponential moving average (EMA) weights recent closes more, so it reacts faster to price changes but gives more false signals. A 20-day EMA turns before a 20-day SMA.

What the 20-, 50- and 200-day averages tell you

The 20-day shows the short-term trend, the 50-day the medium term and the 200-day the long term. Price above the 200-day is commonly read as the long-term bullish side, below it as the bearish side. Averages sometimes act as support or resistance, but not reliably.

Golden cross and death cross

The 50-day crossing above the 200-day is a golden cross; crossing below is a death cross. These are lagging signals: by the time they occur much of the move has often happened, and sideways markets produce misleading crosses.

StateCommon reading
Price > 20 > 50 > 200Bullish on every horizon
Price < 200, 50 > 200Long-term up, short-term weakness
Price > 200, 50 < 200Recovery; cross hasn't happened yet
Price < 20 < 50 < 200Bearish on every horizon

Limits of moving averages

Averages summarise past price; they don't show the future and catch trend changes late. Use them alongside indicators like RSI, MACD and volume rather than as a trading system on their own. This page is educational, not investment advice.

Frequently asked questions

Is EMA or SMA better?

It depends on the use. EMA weights recent prices more, so it reacts faster but is noisier; SMA is slower and smoother. The 200-day SMA is the common long-term trend gauge.

Why does the 200-day average matter?

It's the most widely watched long-term trend measure; many investors and news outlets check whether price is above or below it. That attention makes it a watched level, but not a guaranteed support.

What is a golden cross?

The 50-day moving average crossing above the 200-day. It's a lagging indicator and not a buy signal on its own.
