Liquidation price formula

Isolated margin, approximately: Long = entry × (1 − 1/leverage + MMR). Short = entry × (1 + 1/leverage − MMR). Maintenance margin rate (MMR) is usually 0.4–0.5% for small positions on major pairs and rises in tiers.

Example: 10x long at $60,000 → 60,000 × (1 − 0.1 + 0.005) = $54,300, a 9.5% drop.

Why it differs from the exchange

Exchanges liquidate on mark price with tiered maintenance margin, fees and funding; in cross margin the rest of your balance counts too. The result is approximate.

Leverage and liquidation distance

With MMR 0.5%: 10x ≈ 9.5%, 25x ≈ 3.5%, 50x ≈ 1.5%, 100x ≈ 0.5% adverse move.

What a liquidation map shows

Liquidation maps estimate where leveraged positions would be liquidated. ByStock's Liquidation Magnet applies this formula to swing highs and lows; in our backtest the levels alone were not a reversal signal.

Frequently asked questions

How is the liquidation price calculated?

Isolated margin: long entry × (1 − 1/leverage + MMR), short entry × (1 + 1/leverage − MMR). MMR is usually 0.4–0.5%; the result is approximate.

At 10x leverage, how far can price move before liquidation?

About 9.5% against you with MMR 0.5%; fees and funding shorten it slightly.
